Under Center Offenses

CFB 26OffenseRun Game

Quick Recap:

Under center offenses are broken in College Football 26 because run game isn't better than shotgun, play action doesn't fool anyone, and dropback passing is inferior. Instead, use Gun Wild Trips formation with RPO Read Y Flat, Halfback Draw, and Inside Zone for a balanced attack that actually works. Pass to set up the run, not the other way around.

Why Under Center Offenses Don't Work in College Football 26

Under center offenses are BROKEN in College Football 26. Not because the formations are bad — but because the game just doesn't reward traditional ground and pound football the way you'd expect.

Here's the brutal truth: Run game from under center isn't better than shotgun. Play action doesn't fool anyone. And dropback passing is way better from gun formations.

But if you're a run-first guy who wants to pound the rock? Don't give up. You just need to change your approach.

The solution: Find shotgun formations with good run plays. Build from there. Pass to set up the run — not the other way around.

Best example? Gun Wild Trips formation. Has RPO Read Y Flat, Halfback Draw, Inside Zone, and Dive/Duo. Everything you need for a balanced attack that actually works in this game.

What Makes Under Center Offenses Weak

Run Game Advantage Doesn't Exist

The run game from under center just isn't better than shotgun runs. Shotgun has great running plays AND better RPOs. The blocking schemes work the same. You're not getting some magical advantage by lining up under center.

Meanwhile, shotgun RPOs like Read Y Flat are absolutely dominant. You get the run threat plus an easy outlet pass that destroys zone coverage.

Play Action Is Useless

In real football, play action works because linebackers and safeties bite on the fake. In College Football 26? They don't.

User linebackers especially — good players just won't bite. The blocking on play action is trash. DBs don't react to the fake at all. You're not getting those easy bombs over safeties who crash down.

Plus linebackers recover instantly even if they do bite. No advantage.

Shotgun Passing Is Superior

This is true in real life too — shotgun gives you more time to throw. But in College Football 26, shotgun formations also get better route concepts.

Short posts. Deep corners. Wheel routes. Stick concepts. All the money plays are in shotgun formations.

Under center formations have basic stuff. Shotgun has the GLITCH PLAYS that actually win games.

How to Run a Ground and Pound Offense That Actually Works

Find Shotgun Formations with Good Runs

Stop trying to force under center. Find gun formations that have 2-3 solid run plays plus good passing concepts.

Gun Wild Trips is perfect:

  • RPO Read Y Flat — best RPO in the game
  • Halfback Draw — solid between the tackles
  • Inside Zone — good in most playbooks
  • Dive/Duo — absolutely crushes light boxes

You get run variety plus elite passing plays. That's balance that actually works.

Pass to Set Up the Run

Forget everything you know about real football. In College Football 26, you need to PASS FIRST.

Why? Because the pass game is overpowered. Hit a few easy completions with your best passing concepts. Force them into coverage adjustments or glitch blitzes.

Once they're panicking about your passing attack? That's when you hit them with Dive, Duo, or your RPO run reads. Light boxes everywhere.

Use RPOs as Your Base Runs

Traditional handoffs are fine. But RPOs are better because you get two threats in one play.

RPO Read Y Flat especially — if they bring the safety down to stop run, you throw the flat route for easy yards. If they stay in coverage, you hand it off to a light box.

It's like having an audible system built into every play call.

What Formations Actually Work for Run-Heavy Offenses

Gun Wild Trips

The king. Found in most playbooks. Perfect mix of runs and passes. RPO Read Y Flat alone makes this formation elite.

Gun Trips Stack

Another solid option. Usually has good inside runs plus passing concepts that attack all levels.

Gun Split

Basic but effective. Good draw plays and simple passing concepts that work.

Key point: Don't get married to one formation. Find 2-3 gun formations with different run plays. Mix them up based on down and distance.

Common Mistakes with Under Center Offenses

Thinking Play Action Will Work

It won't. Save yourself the frustration. If you want to throw downfield, just call actual passing plays from shotgun.

Forcing Traditional I-Formation Runs

Fullback dives and traditional power runs just aren't that good. The blocking is mediocre and you're not getting better push than shotgun runs.

Not Having a Passing Plan

If you're gonna run heavy, you need efficient passing plays to keep defenses honest. Find your 2-3 money passing concepts and use them.

Fighting the Game Instead of Adapting

Look — I get it. In real life, under center offenses are awesome. But College Football 26 rewards different things.

You can still be a run-first team. You just need to do it from shotgun with RPOs and draws instead of traditional formations.

Adapt to what works. Don't fight what doesn't.
