The Short Version

Hold LB / L1 + the receiver icon. That's it. That throws a bullet pass that arrives HIGH. Up above the defender's head instead of into their chest.

Most people think they should lob it when there's a defender in the way. That's wrong. A lob takes too long to get there. You want a bullet. Just a HIGH bullet. That's what the high ball does.

When to use it: simple rule: defender between you and the receiver? High ball it. No defender in the way? Don't bother.

Taller receiver = better high ball. The ball gets up even higher. Keep that in mind when you're picking who to throw to.

---

What Is a High Ball Pass?

A high ball is a placement modifier. It changes WHERE the ball goes, not just the speed. Hold LB (Xbox) or L1 (PlayStation) while you press your receiver's icon and the game throws a bullet pass that's placed HIGH. Over the defender's head instead of through their body.

This isn't a lob. A lob is slow. A high ball is still a bullet pass. Fast delivery. Just delivered high.

If you're playing on placement accuracy, which you should be, you almost never want a lob or touch pass. You want bullets. High balls ARE bullets. That's the point.

---

When Should You Throw a High Ball?

One rule. Repeat it until it's automatic:

Defender between you and your receiver? High ball it.

No defender between you? Don't.

That's really the whole thing. Against man coverage especially, if a defender is riding your receiver's hip or sitting in the throwing lane, high ball gets the ball over them before they can react.

Even when a throw LOOKS clean, there's still a case for high balling. Say your RB is open in the flat. Looks like a simple throw. But there's a defender nearby who could switch stick and undercut it. That's a crazy play, but it's possible. High balling removes that risk. Not much downside to throwing it high. Big downside if you get picked.

Another spot: receiver running across the back of the end zone. Defenders underneath. A tall defender or a good user could get a hand on a regular bullet. High ball puts it up where only your receiver can get it.

---

What's the One Exception?

Deep balls over the top of everybody. When your receiver is past all the defenders and has space. In that situation, you can just tap the icon for a lob. Let it drop into their hands.

But be honest with yourself. Those throws aren't high percentage. You won't be throwing many of them. Don't build your offense around a play that works 40% of the time.

---

How to Actually Throw It. Button Execution

Pre-snap, identify which receiver has a defender in their throwing lane

At the top of your drop, hold LB (Xbox) / L1 (PS)

While holding LB/L1, press your receiver's icon

Ball delivers as a bullet, placed high

After the catch, go for a possession catch, tap the catch button (don't hold it)

The tap method on the catch gets you a possession catch. That's what brings the ball down with control after it's been thrown high. Green catches happen this way.

---

Why Does This Work?

The ball clears the defender's hands. That's it. Simple physics. If the ball is above the defender, the defender can't catch it. Your receiver, especially a tall one, can go up and get it.

A lob ALSO goes over the defender, but it takes forever to get there. That gives the defense time to rotate, switch stick, or just have the defender turn around and make a play. A high BULLET gets there fast. The window is smaller for the defense to react.

The taller your receiver, the bigger the advantage. A 6'4" receiver is going to go up and WIN that ball. A 5'9" slot might not. Pick your spots based on who you're throwing to.

---

Common Mistakes People Make

Lobbing when they should high ball. Slow ball = more time for the defense. Stop it.

High balling when there's no defender in the way. No point. It just makes the throw harder for your receiver to handle cleanly.

Holding the catch button instead of tapping it. Holding goes for an aggressive catch. Check it pre-snap.

Forgetting receiver height matters. Throwing a high ball to a short receiver against a tall corner is just giving the ball away.

---

What Counters the High Ball?

Two things beat it:

A tall defender who can match your receiver's height. If they can get up to the same level, it's a jump ball. Not always in your favor.

A well-timed switch stick. Good players can switch to a nearby defender, get them in position, and go up for it. This is rare but it happens. Especially at higher levels of play.

Neither of these counters means you stop throwing high balls.
