TL;DR: These are 10 beginner tips that win you more games in Madden 27. None of them are hard. Here's the short version:
- High Ball Passing — hold Left Bumper as you throw to get the ball up high, over defenders.
- User 101 — play your assignment first. User a yellow zone linebacker. Always look for work.
- Pass Pro 101 — check the flame icons before the snap so nobody comes free by surprise.
- Timing-Based Catching — tap the catch icon right before the ball hits your receiver's hands.
- Custom Stem Routes — hold Left Bumper and move the Left Stick to change where a route cuts.
- Blitz or No Blitz — ask this at the line every play. It tells you to block someone and get the ball out fast.
- Containing QB Rollouts — tap RB then LB to lock the QB in the pocket.
- Switch Sticking — flick the Right Stick to a closer defender and go make the play.
- Run Fits — check who's set to stop the run, then user someone who isn't.
- Field Goals — use Tap and Hold, time it off one wall, and go practice.
Now let's break each one down.
How do you throw a high ball in Madden 27?
Ever thrown a pick where your QB just under threw it for no reason? Or watched a defensive back leap 15 feet in the air and grab it? Here's how to make that stop.
Some people lob it or throw a touch pass to get the ball up. Makes sense. But the ball stays in the air way too long.
The mechanic you want is the high pass. Or high ball. When you high pass, the ball goes high. Simple.
And here's the part most people don't know. You can high pass while throwing a bullet. It doesn't have to be a lofted throw. The ball goes up, your receiver catches it high.
Think about how useful that is when:
- There's a defender sitting underneath
- There's a user lurking in the shadows
- There's a bunch of traffic underneath your receiver
Get the ball above all of it.
How to do it: Hold Left Bumper while you throw. That's it. Everything else stays the same.
- Throw your normal bullet? Hold Left Bumper.
- Want to RAC catch? Hold Left Bumper, then RAC catch.
- Want to aggressive catch? Hold Left Bumper, then aggressive catch.
- You CAN high pass and lob. But probably don't.
All the best players use this constantly. Against man when the defender is underneath, and against zone.
How does usering work in Madden 27?
The user is the guy who gets a pass deflection. Perfectly jumps the drag route for a pick six. Gets a huge hit in the backfield on third and inches and forces a turnover.
Think of your user like a great middle linebacker in real life. Luke Kuechly. Didn't matter what the offense called — he was everywhere. Troy Polamalu at safety, jumping over linemen, blowing up the run, jumping routes. Everywhere. That's what your user should be.
Play your assignment first
Here's what most people do wrong. They run around with no purpose. Say you're in Cover 2 and your job is the yellow zone on the right. People just... wander. Then say "this defense stinks." No. You left your spot for no reason.
Kuechly played his assignment first. You have to earn the right to roam. This is why simple defenses matter — the more complex the defense, the harder it is to know your assignment.
User a yellow zone linebacker
This is the recommended spot. If you user a defensive lineman, you're pass rushing. Sometimes you get a quick shed, sometimes you get put in the dirt. That's the most important player on the field getting neutralized. Yellow zone / linebacker = low risk. Mess up your assignment there, it's usually not the end of the world.
Always be looking for work
While you're defending your area, look for more to do. Start on the snag, then work up to the in route in the middle. Defend your area AND help elsewhere. Key phrase: always looking for work.
Know when to strafe vs sprint
A lot of people strafe the whole time. That's not right. Here's the breakdown:
- Left stick / slow play to start, reading the field
- Strafe when a route is running INTO you, or you're sitting on a hitch
- Sprint (hold turbo) when you need to go full speed in any direction
If you are never sprinting while usering, you are not usering correctly. One warning: if a receiver is running full speed and you're strafing, he runs right past you. Get off strafe to match speed.
Don't user where you already have help
This is huge. Say you have a hard flat to the left covering 0 to 5 yards. Should you ever user down there? No. You already have help. User your area and areas of weakness. Not where you're already covered.
Once you start recognizing where the offense is attacking, you can go play that spot yourself. Third and 30, you know something deep is coming — start cheating toward that area before the snap. You have a bird's eye view. You should never be surprised when a route breaks.
Using the user on run defense
One of the biggest mistakes: getting caught up in the offensive line. Did Kuechly ever get caught up in the line? No. He flowed to the football.
- Line up on the side OPPOSITE where you think the run is going
- Flow over the top
- Make the play
What does the flame icon mean in Madden 27 pass protection?
This will change your offense if you get it down. And if you never learn it, you're going to struggle.
Before the snap, pull up your play art: Right Trigger + Up on the Right Stick. You'll see flame icons on certain defenders. (At the line these can be weird, so let everybody set, then look.)
The flame icon means that guy is HOT. Your line has decided they'll leave him unblocked if he blitzes. This is real football. You can't block everybody. So you identify who you're NOT blocking and plan around it.
If the guy with the flame blitzes, he's coming free. Every time. So when he gets to you, it's not a glitch. You just didn't account for it pre-snap.
The habit: always check who's hot before you snap.
Slide the offensive line
Use the Right Stick to shift your line:
- Flick Right = slide right, changes who's hot
- Double-click Right = full slide right
- Flick Left = slide left
- Double-click Left = full slide left
By shifting, you move the flame to a different defender. Now the guy who was hot gets blocked.
Move the flame icon manually (On-Target)
This is great against players who hover/get low with their user.
- Flick Up on the Right Stick to activate On-Target
- Move the flame icon manually to a specific defender
- Put it on the USER if you know they're bluffing
Now your line blocks the guy who was originally hot, and the user is the one you leave free. If the user bluffs and doesn't blitz, your line handles everyone else. Right the majority of the time.
The counter you have to know
There is ALWAYS someone hot. Always. If you full slide right and it's now hot left, and they blitz that guy, he's coming free. That's how it's supposed to work.
- Un-target the user first. Make HIM the hot
- Then look around and shift to find a combination you're okay with
- Ask: if this guy is unblocked, am I okay with it?
General rule: the further out or further back a defender is, the more okay you are with him being hot. A slot corner on the right takes time to blitz and come free, so you have plenty of time to get your read off.

How does timing-based catching work in Madden 27?
Controversial feature. But when you get good at it, it's really, really good.
When you go to catch a pass, a small meter pops up above your receiver. Time your input to land in the green zone.
The two methods
Method 1: Hold Down
- Hold the catch icon as the ball comes in
- For a possession catch, that's A (or X on PlayStation)
- Release in the green zone = caught
- Release in the yellow zone = dice roll, same as previous years
- Hold too long = red = drop
Method 2: Tap (recommended)
- Just tap the catch icon right before the ball reaches your hands. That's it.
Why tap is better
- You get more greens. Watch for when the ball is about to hit the hands, then tap.
- You eliminate reds. In the heat of the moment it's easy to hold too long and get a red. Tapping, that never happens.
Green = catch it every time (unless the defense gets a perfect hit or wins the ball). Yellow/Orange = dice roll, totally fine. Red = the tap method makes this basically impossible.
Settings to change
Go to Game Options and find these three:
- Set the first two to 10 yards, easiest to start with
- Set Catching UI Feedback Type to On so you can see the feedback
The one exception
If you're throwing an aggressive catch — like lobbing into double coverage — use the hold down method instead. When it's hard to tell exactly when the hands get on the ball, holding and timing gives you more control. Personal preference. But for everything else, tap the icon.
What is custom stemming in Madden 27?
Custom stemming is an incredibly cool feature added a few years ago. Any route with a cut in it, for the most part, you can custom stem.
How to custom stem:
- Press the receiver's icon to select him
- Hold Left Bumper
- Use the Left Stick or D-pad to move the stem
- Left Stick = more control
- D-pad = five-yard increments
You have full control over how far a route cuts. Fourth and 12 and need that curl past the marker? Stem him up. Need him cutting faster against a blitz? Stem him down. You change where and when a receiver breaks — without changing the play.
Ways to use it:
- Curl routes — stem up so he gets past the sticks with room to come back
- In routes — stem down to cut at 2 yards instead of 10
- Tight end corner routes — stem down so he cuts faster and gets open sooner
- Post routes — stem all the way down so he cuts fast into the middle
- Outside fades — stem him for a potential big shot play
Note: not every route allows it. Some fades will, some won't. Test it and see. You never know how you can makeshift a route to be really, really good.
Should I block for the blitz in Madden 27?
The first question you should ask when you're passing and get to the line is: blitz or no blitz? This is you, the QB, reading the defense.
You won't be right every single time. That's fine. But it starts giving you an idea of what the defense is doing, and it helps you call better plays. Because this game comes down to two things: play calling and execution.
How to read it
Look at the defense. If the pass rushers are about 10 yards off the QB and everyone else is just pass rushing anyway — that's not scary. Say no blitz. But if they move a guy down close to the line and they're usering someone, that's when I'd say blitz, blitz, blitz.
What the blitz read changes
If I think it's a blitz, I set up protection — you can hold Left Trigger to set up different protections. Then I'm likely going to block somebody.
1. Whether you block an extra person. There are five eligible receivers on any play. Five. Only five. If you block somebody, you go from five to four — you cut it by 20%.
- If it's a blitz, block someone (a tight end or a halfback) to pick it up
- If they only sent four, don't waste the block
That's the mistake a lot of people make. Blocking your halfback when they only sent four doesn't help — the halfback just sits there for a while. Don't block extra people unless you need to.
2. How fast you need to get the ball out. If you see blitz, you need to get rid of it quick. Look for your hots faster, and your route combo should have more hot options. A combo where your fastest route is a two-Mississippi in? Bad blitz beater. But if you have all day and they're not blitzing, you can go a little deeper.
What a good blitz beater looks like
If I see blitz, I might send my halfback out knowing the blitz is coming free, but I've got a quick read to my drag, a quick read to the halfback, maybe another drag on the right. All within a split second. You can quick throw.
The simple version — blitz or no blitz tells you two things:
- Do I need to block somebody?
- Do I need to get the ball out fast?
How do you stop QB rollouts in Madden 27?
You've played the guy who rolls out and launches the ball. Across his body, a little dump down, 50 yards deep, whatever. One of my five core tenants of defense is contain the quarterback.
How to do it:
- Tap Right Bumper (RB) / R1 on PlayStation
- Then Left Bumper (LB) / L1 on PlayStation
- Do nothing else
When they try to roll out, they're getting sacked.
Good rule of thumb: almost never run a totally stock pass rush. Run some sort of contain or stunt on almost every play. A stunt is just left on the right stick + Right Bumper / R1. You can also stunt and contain at the same time.
Example — Tom Two Man:
- Stunt in the middle
- Contain on the outside
The contains keep them from dropping too far or rolling outside. Hold them in the pocket.
When to skip it: against a pure pocket passer who never rolls out, you can avoid containing. But if they roll out at all — contain every defense. Also, I like my contain guys to be good athletes, in case you need to hawk somebody down.
What is switch sticking in Madden 27?
Switch sticking might be the single most powerful mechanic in Madden 27 for getting stops. Sounds scary. It's not.
If you see a route breaking open and your user can't get there naturally, you switch onto somebody closer and go make the play.
How to switch stick
Option 1: Right Stick (the main way)
When the ball is snapped, flick the right stick toward the player you want.
- Flick up to go to the deep middle
- Flick down, left, or right to go to players in those directions
- It's directional. Be precise. If you keep landing on the wrong player, you're not being precise enough.
Do NOT click the right stick in. Clicking sends defenders at the QB and blows up your zone coverage.
Option 2: D-Pad
Very few people use it. None of the top players do. But it bails you out in one spot: if you're stuck on a defensive lineman or blitzer, you can't switch stick with the right stick, because your current player isn't in a pass coverage assignment. The D-pad gives you a way out.
The rules
- Switch sticking only works on passes and RPOs
- It only works BEFORE the ball is caught
- On a run play, can't switch stick
- QB already threw it, can't switch stick
How to start
This is one of the biggest skill gaps by far. Start here:
- Switch to underneath defenders first. It's low risk.
- Easiest rule of thumb: begin every play by switching left or right
- After that, look for the player getting open, switch to someone near him, and cut him off
How do run fits work in Madden 27?
Every defense you pick has something called run fits — this is how your players react to the run. Not every player will have one. On certain plays, more players have them than others.
How to check your run fits:
- Hold down Right Trigger, then press X or B (Xbox)
- Square or Circle on PlayStation
Look left to right and you'll see it switch.
Why it matters: if you're stopping the run, you want a play with as many players in run fits as possible. No run fit = that player isn't concerned about the run.
Favorite run-stopping coverages:
- Cover 4 Quarters — typically 8 to 9 players in run fits
- Cover 3 Sky — 8 players in run fits
Cover 4 Quarters gives you one extra body over Cover 3 Sky.
The usering trick
When a player, like a safety, does NOT have a run fit, user him yourself. Without usering him, he backpedals and doesn't get involved. User him, and he does whatever you say — come downhill, eat a block, free up a linebacker. That's an extra person in the box. A lot of run defense is a pure numbers game.
The move: check your run fits, then user somebody who either:
- Is NOT in a run fit, OR
- Is away from where the run is going
Know the run is going right? User a player and cheat him over to make the play. It can be risky. But it's worth trying.
How do you make field goals in Madden 27?
Field goals in Madden 27 are hard. And honestly — rightfully so. It's been way too long where you could chip shot 70-yarders. Even in Ultimate Team. That needed to change. Here's how to actually kick.
Set up your settings
Go to: Options > Settings > Game Options
- If you play online at all, use multimeter
- If you don't play online, use plastic pad (way easier)
- Control scheme: Tap and Hold
Understand Tap and Hold
- Line up the reticle in the middle (it's going back and forth)
- Hold down A (Xbox) / X (PlayStation) to fill the meter
- Let go RIGHT BEFORE it hits the top
The timing trick
This was learned a couple years ago in college football, which is very similar. Don't try to track the reticle going back AND forth.
- Pick ONE wall to time it off of
- Focus only on that wall. Not both.
- It's been easier to go off the right wall
You don't need it perfect. Just inside that little box.
Go practice
Go into practice mode. Actually practice it.
- Everybody can make an extra point
- Not everybody can make a long field goal
- Test your limits. Back it up, add wind, make it hard.
Field goals matter. Missing them loses games. Know your range. Know your limits.
