Gap Shoot Counter

CFB 26DefenseRun Game

Quick Recap:

Gap shoot is a broken defense where you position over the DT in formations like Nickel 3-3 Mint and shoot the gap at snap for almost guaranteed pressure. Counter it with halfback draws or direct snaps. Most people don't know this and keep running shotgun plays right into it.

What Is the Gap Shoot Counter

Gap shoot is basically a glitch. Been in College Football 26 for a while. And it works way too well.

Here's what happens: you position yourself over the defensive tackle. When the ball snaps, you shoot the gap. The DT comes free almost every time. It's broken. And honestly? I avoided talking about this for months because it's game-breaking.

But here's the thing. The counter is stupid simple. Halfback draws destroy this defense. Direct snaps work too. Most people just don't know what to call.

You need to know both sides. How to run it when you're getting gashed by shotgun runs. How to beat it when someone's spamming it against you.

How to Set Up Gap Shoot Defense

You need the right personnel first. Three defensive linemen in the middle. Not four, not two. Three.

Formations that work:

  • 2-3 Odd
  • 3-3 Cub
  • 3-4 Tight
  • Nickel 3-3 Mint (most popular)

Formation that does NOT work:

  • Double Mug. Don't even try it

The outside guys need to be linebackers, not defensive ends. That's the key.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Pick Nickel 3-3 Mint (easiest option)

Step 2: Call Cover Three Match

Step 3: Spread your defensive line

Step 4: Position yourself over the defensive tackle. Get right on his butt. You can even get into that squatting stance.

Step 5: When the ball snaps. Shoot the gap

The DT will come in with you. You'll get pressure almost every play.

When to Use Gap Shoot

This isn't something you spam all game. Use it when:

  • Opponent is killing you with shotgun runs
  • They're in spread formations constantly
  • You need a quick stop on third and short
  • Red zone defense. Forces quick throws

Don't use it when:

  • They're calling a lot of draws
  • Heavy formations with tight ends
  • Goal line situations (not enough coverage)

What Counters Gap Shoot

Here's where most people mess up. They think this defense is unstoppable. It's not.

Halfback draws are KILLER against gap shoot. Go to your play concepts. Choose draws. Call them.

Best Counter Plays

Mid Draw out of Trey Open Halfback Strong

This is money. Draw plays use pass blocking. Your offensive line doesn't block the same as normal run plays. They're selling the pass instead. The gap shooters run right past the play.

Trips Tight End Draw

Another great option. Works at a high clip.

Halfback Direct Snap Runs

Same concept as draws. The blocking scheme picks up the shooters.

Why These Counters Work

Pass blocking vs run blocking - totally different. When someone shoots the gap on a run play, they're expecting run blocking. Draw plays fool them.

Sometimes the DTackle still sheds and you get stopped. That happens. But most of the time, you get picked up and can rip off good yards.

The real benefit: It gets people out of this defense. Forces them into something else. Opens up the rest of your shotgun runs.

Common Mistakes with Gap Shoot

Wrong formation: Using four down linemen instead of three. Doesn't work the same.

Wrong positioning: Standing too far away from the defensive tackle. You need to be right on him.

Timing the snap: Going too early or too late. Practice the timing.

Overusing it: Spamming it every play. Good players will adjust with draws.

How to Stop Gap Shoot as Offense

Recognition is key. If you see:

  • Three down linemen
  • Someone positioned over the defensive tackle
  • Nickel 3-3 type look

Start thinking draws. Don't panic and change your whole gameplan.

Quick audible options:

  • Any halfback draw
  • Direct snap to HB
  • Quick slants (if they're selling out)

The draw counter works. Use it. Forces them out of the glitch defense and back into real football.

Why This Defense Works So Well

It's a glitch. Plain and simple. The gap shooting mechanic combined with specific formations creates something that's not realistic football.

But it's in the game. People use it. You need to know how to beat it.

Remember. Draws are your friend. Don't overthink it. Call the counter. Get your yards. Move on.
