Cover 3 Bomb

CFB 26OffensePassing

Quick Recap:

The Cover 3 Bomb exploits Cover 3 defense by running a custom stemmed curl route (Y triangle + left bumper + up on D-pad) to pull the outside corner down, then throwing over his head to a deep crosser or post. Works from formations like Gun Wing Trio Weak PA Y Wheel or Bunch Strong Offset - just add the custom stem to the outside curl and hit the deep route for an easy touchdown.

What is the Cover 3 Bomb?

The Cover 3 Bomb is a one-play touchdown concept that attacks the weakness in Cover 3 defense. Simple setup. Curl route with custom stem plus deep crosser or post. Works from most formations. Good for one free touchdown per game against Cover 3.

Here's the deal. Cover 3 has outside corners sitting low in their zones. We exploit this by running a custom stemmed up curl route that pulls the corner down, then throw over his head to a deep route.

The beauty? Almost every playbook can run this. Gun Wing Trio Weak, Bunch Strong Offset - doesn't matter. Same concept works everywhere.

How to Set Up the Cover 3 Bomb

Step 1: Identify Cover 3
Look for three deep safeties. Pay attention to that left outside corner. He's your target.

Step 2: Set the Curl Route
Put your outside wide receiver on a curl route. This is the key piece.

Step 3: Custom Stem Up
This is where the magic happens:

  • Y triangle
  • Select the outside receiver
  • Hold left bumper
  • Go up once on the D-pad

That custom stem makes the corner think deep route. He holds low. Now you've got him.

Step 4: Add the Deep Route
Need some kind of deep post or deep crosser from another receiver. This is who gets the touchdown.

Gun Wing Trio Weak - PA Y Wheel Setup

One of the best ways to run this concept. The play already has a super deep crosser from the middle slot receiver.

Just add your custom stemmed curl on the outside - boom. Touchdown waiting to happen.

Bunch Strong Offset - Motion Deep Post

Same exact concept:

  1. Deep curl route with custom stem up
  2. Post route from bunch formation
  3. Can even custom stem the post down to make him run faster

The post route crosses right above that outside third zone. Easy money.

When to Use the Cover 3 Bomb

Perfect situations:

  • Opponent keeps showing Cover 3
  • Need a quick touchdown
  • Red zone. Shorter field makes it easier
  • Third and long when defense expects zone

Don't use when:

  • Seeing consistent Cover 2 or Cover 4
  • Opponent switching up coverages every play
  • Heavy pass rush, need time for routes to develop

Remember, this is good for one free touchdown per game. Don't overuse it. Smart opponents will adjust.

Why the Cover 3 Bomb Works

Cover 3 splits the deep field into three zones. Outside corners have deep third responsibility BUT they also have to respect underneath routes.

The custom stemmed curl creates a high-low conflict:

  • Corner sees the stem up
  • Thinks deep route coming
  • Starts to bail
  • Then sees curl developing
  • Comes down to cover it
  • Deep route goes right over his head

It's all about eye manipulation. Make that corner think one thing, then hit him with another.

What Counters the Cover 3 Bomb

Defensive adjustments to watch for:

Cover 2. Two deep safeties instead of three. Your deep route might hit the safety.

Cover 4. Four deep zones. Much harder to find the soft spot.

Man coverage. No zones to exploit. Need different concepts.

Bracket coverage. If opponent catches on, they might bracket your deep route with safety help.

How to Counter Their Counters

When they switch to Cover 2. Attack the middle of the field. That's where Cover 2 is weak.

Against Cover 4. Different concept needed. Cover 3 Bomb won't work here.

Seeing man coverage? Time for picks, rubs, speed matchups.

Common Cover 3 Bomb Mistakes

Mistake #1: Wrong Custom Stem
Going up TWO clicks instead of one. Too much stem and the route breaks down.

Mistake #2: Wrong Read
Throwing to the curl instead of the deep route. The curl is just the setup. Deep route is the money.

Mistake #3: Bad Timing
Throwing too early. Let that deep route get above the corner first.

Mistake #4: Overusing It
Running this every time you see Cover 3. Smart opponents adjust. Use it once, maybe twice per game max.

Mistake #5: Wrong Formation
Trying this from formations without good deep route options. Need that crosser or post to make it work.

Pro Tips

Can custom stem the deep route DOWN to make him cross the face quicker.

Works best when you've already established other route concepts. Don't make this your first play.

If the corner doesn't bite on the stem. Check down to the curl. Still a decent gain.

This is your one free touchdown against Cover 3 teams. Make it count.
