User Run Defense Mistakes

CFB 27DefenseUser DefenseRun Game

Quick Recap:

Sitting your user linebacker on the line of scrimmage gets him swallowed by the O-line every time. Keep him at depth so he can read and flow. Stop strafing on run plays; that's a pass coverage habit that kills your downhill pursuit. Left stick, flow to the ball, attack the gap.

You're Losing Run Stops Because of Your User. Here's Why

Your user controls more run plays than you think. Not the defensive line. Not your linebackers on auto. You. And most people are doing two things that kill their run defense every single snap. Standing in the wrong spot and strafing when they should be flowing.

Fix those two things and your run defense looks completely different.

What Are the Biggest User Run Defense Mistakes in College Football 27?

Mistake #1. Sitting on the line of scrimmage. You park your user right at the line and come straight down at the snap. The O-line picks him up every single time. You get zero stops and wonder why your linebacker is useless.

Keep him back. That distance is the whole thing: it gives you room to actually flow to the ball carrier instead of running into a guard and going nowhere.

  • How far back depends on the situation and how you're reading the run
  • Fourth and inches? You can creep down closer, he might get the inch, but that's still a solid stop
  • Any other situation, stay back and read first

Mistake #2. Strafing on a run play. This one is big. People carry their pass defense habits into the run game and strafe away from the ball instead of attacking it.

Find a real coach who tells his linebackers to backpedal on the run. Not happening. You're on the LEFT STICK. Flowing downhill toward the play. Strafe is never your first move here.

How Do You Actually User a Linebacker in the Run Game?

Once you've got the right depth and you're reading the snap, here's what you're focused on:

  • Flow to the ball, left stick, downhill, read the run
  • Avoid blockers, sounds obvious, harder than it sounds
  • Clog the lane OR float across, you can attack the A or B gap and then drift to the other side to help make the tackle
  • Slow playing works too. You don't have to be guns blazing every time. Read, react, close

You're still responsible for your pass zone area. That doesn't go away. But when it's a run, the left stick gets you downhill. That's the adjustment.

How Do You Get a Safety Involved in the Run Fit?

When you see an overload and you think run. Stay on the weak side so you can either flow over the top or attack the point of attack.

If you want an extra body in the run fit, here are the controls:

  • Hold Right Trigger, then press X or B (Xbox) / Square or Circle (PlayStation)
  • X / Square = run fits left
  • B / Circle = run fits right

Here's the honest truth on those auto run fit safeties. The guy won't flow all the way where you need him. He gets so far and stops. Not great.

But if you USER the safety yourself and move him? Now he's an extra guy in the run fit that the offensive line doesn't account for. The O-line isn't looking for him. He shows up and the ball carrier has nowhere to go.

User a more aggressive safety. At the snap, flow him over the top. He's actually there. He wouldn't have been there if you left it on auto.

When Should You Adjust Your User Depth Based on Down and Distance?

Not every snap is the same. Here's how to think about it:

  • Normal downs, stay back, read the play, then flow
  • Fourth and short / goal line, you can creep down closer to the line. Tighter fit, faster reaction needed. He might get the short yardage but your user has a real shot at the stop
  • Overloaded formations / clear run tendencies. Get a safety usered into the fit before the snap, stay weak side, be ready to flow

Why Does the User Matter This Much in the Run Game?

Because the CPU-controlled defenders have assignments. They go where they're told. The offensive line accounts for them.

Your user doesn't have an assignment. You give him one in real time. That's the gap the offense doesn't plan for. When you user a safety into the run fit, the O-line isn't blocking him. When you flow your linebacker to the right gap instead of strafing away, you're making a decision faster than the CPU would.

That's why the user matters MORE in the run game, not less. Most people think pass defense is where the user earns his money. It's not. A bad user in the run game gives up chunk plays all game and you won't even know why.

Quick Reference, User Run Defense Fixes

  • Stay off the line of scrimmage, depth first, then attack
  • Left stick to flow downhill, strafing is not your first move on a run
  • Clog the lane or float across, you don't have to pick one direction and commit blind
  • Slow playing is an option. Read before you attack
  • Run fit controls: RT + X/B (Xbox) or RT + Square/Circle (PlayStation)
  • Auto run fit safeties won't finish the job. USER the safety if you want him actually there
