RPO QB Power. The Play That Probably Should Be Banned (But Isn't)
This play is stupid good. Like, almost unfair. The Empty RPO Peak QB Power in College Football 27 lets your QB take off and most defenders literally cannot react until it's too late. That's not an exaggeration. That's how the game is coded.
Here's exactly where to find it, how to run it, and what to do when someone runs it on you.
Where Do You Find the RPO QB Power Play?
Playbook: Kansas State. Also in Temple, Texas A&M, and Wake Forest
Formation: Gun Wing Slot Weak
Play: Empty RPO Peak QB Power
Pull up any of those four playbooks, go to Gun Wing Slot Weak, and find it. That's the whole setup.
How Do You Run the RPO QB Power Correctly?
- Line up with your tight ends to the wide side of the field.
- Snap the ball.
- Watch the animation play out.
- Take off with your QB.
That's it. No read progression. No pre-snap adjustments required. Snap it and go.
One thing to keep in mind. Don't hold turbo while you're cutting or in traffic. It kills your agility. Save turbo for open field once you're past the line. Burn it early and you'll slow yourself down when it matters most.
Why Does This Play Work So Well?
Here's the part that makes this almost unfair.
Because it's an RPO, a run-pass option, the game treats it like a pass play. And here's the rule the game follows: any defender in a coverage assignment has to honor that assignment. Man coverage, zone, match - doesn't matter. They're locked in until the QB crosses the line of scrimmage.
By the time they're allowed to react to the run? You're already past them.
You're not beating defenders with speed. You're beating the game logic. That's why this works against good players too. It's not skill-based, it's code-based.
What Other Plays Should You Mix In From This Formation?
Most plays in Gun Wing Slot Weak have the halfback sitting in the backfield. These three don't, they're all "empty" sets:
- Empty QB Sweep, solid play on its own
- Empty Halfback Bubble, works well against zone; defenders have to respect it
- Empty RPO Peak QB Power, the main one
Real talk. Most people you play online are going to struggle with just the QB Power by itself. You can run that thing over and over before you even need to switch it up. But when they DO start selling out to stop it, hit them with the QB Sweep or the Halfback Bubble.
Against man coverage, the Halfback Bubble isn't going to be your best look. Stick with zone situations for that one. The QB Sweep stays solid regardless.
What Counters the RPO QB Power If Someone Runs It on You?
One answer. QB spies.
Put a defender on a spy assignment and he'll track the QB instead of sitting in coverage. He's not locked into a zone or a man assignment. So the RPO rule doesn't freeze him. He reacts to the run immediately.
That's the counter. One adjustment. Done.
If you're getting torched by this play and you haven't tried a spy yet. That's the move. Stop overcomplicating it.
What Mistakes Do People Make Running This Play?
- Wrong side of the field. Tight ends go to the wide side. Don't flip it and wonder why it's not working.
- Holding turbo too early. Save it for open space. Cutting with turbo held down reduces your agility. You'll run yourself into a defender instead of past him.
- Abandoning it too fast. Most opponents won't adjust immediately. Stay on this play until they prove they can stop it. Don't pull off a play that's working just to mix things up.
- Not having a backup plan. If they DO adjust with spies, you need one of the other empty plays ready. Have the QB Sweep and the Halfback Bubble in your head before the game starts.
