Counting Numbers Run Game

CFB 27OffenseRun GamePlaybook Tips

Quick Recap:

Pre-snap, count defenders in the box versus your blockers on the run side. If they outnumber you, someone's coming free. Use right stick to flip the play, left trigger to check blocking assignments, and B/Circle + left stick to motion a tight end across the formation to fix the numbers before you snap. Four seconds of pre-snap work beats reacting after the damage is done.

What Is Counting Numbers in the Run Game?

Before you snap. Count the defenders near the box. Then use motion and audibles to get more blockers to where you're running. That's it. That's the whole thing.

You don't need a specific formation. You don't need a specific play. This works everywhere. The idea is simple: if you have more blockers than they have defenders at the point of attack, you win. Motion helps you do that. Or it pulls a defender away from the box so you're not fighting an extra guy.

Most people just snap the ball. Don't be most people.

How Do You Actually Count the Numbers?

Pre-snap, look at the box. Count how many defenders are sitting near the line of scrimmage on the side you want to run.

Then count your blockers on that side.

If they've got more defenders than you've got blockers. Someone's coming free. That's a problem before you even snap. Fix it before the play, not after.

Here's the process:

  1. Flip the play to the side you want using the right stick
  2. Hold left trigger to check your blocking. See who's blocked and who isn't
  3. Use B/Circle + left stick to motion a player across the formation
  4. Watch if a defender follows. If one does, that's man coverage. Now you know
  5. If the numbers still don't look right, send the motioned guy back the other direction with B/Circle + left stick
  6. Use right stick up to untarget a blocker if you don't need them at that spot

Take maybe four seconds. That's all it costs.

When Should You Use Motion to Fix the Numbers?

Use it when a defender is sitting unblocked near where you're running. That's the clearest sign.

A tight end motion works really well here. Motion him across the formation to the side you're running. If the defense doesn't follow, you've got an extra blocker. If they do follow, you've learned something about their coverage AND you might've pulled a defender out of the box.

Specific situations where this pays off:

  • Halfback Stretch, defense is in a weak set, motion the tight end across, get that extra blocker to the outside. The safety barely shifts. Big gain.
  • Inside Zone. Motion a defender OUT of the box first, then run it. Takes one guy out of the fit before the ball is even snapped.
  • Tight end motion right to left. The tight end leads through the hole, picks up the middle linebacker who would've blown the play up. That's the difference between a two-yard gain and a first down.

Why Does This Work?

Defenses are built around run fits. Every defender near the box has an assignment. A gap they're supposed to fill. When you motion a tight end across, the defense has to decide: do we follow him, or do we hold our fit?

If they follow, they just handed you a better numbers situation on the backside. If they don't follow, you've got an extra blocker they didn't account for.

Either way, you made the defense react. That's the point.

A tight end motion can:

  • Kick out a free edge rusher and seal him
  • Open a cutback lane on the backside
  • Pull him into the hole as a lead blocker on a linebacker
  • Remove a defender from the run fit entirely if they follow him away from the box

What Can Go Wrong With This?

Motion doesn't guarantee anything. Be clear on that.

If a defender follows your motion, it can actually hurt you. Especially if that motion pulls your blocker into a spot that collapses your blocking scheme.

There's a real example of this: untargeting an edge blocker to free up a lane. But that edge defender ended up getting double-teamed for a second, then came clean and blew the play up completely. The manipulation backfired. Happens.

Common mistakes:

  • Motioning without watching the defense. Always watch what the defender does when you motion. That's the information you're buying.
  • Untargeting a blocker without knowing who that leaves free, check your blocking with left trigger before you untarget anyone
  • Motioning and then not adjusting, if the numbers still look bad after the motion, snap anyway. That's the same mistake you were trying to avoid in the first place.
  • Only using this on certain plays. This works everywhere. If you're only counting numbers on one formation, you're leaving it on the table most of the game.

What Counters This?

Man coverage can follow your motion and erase the numbers advantage before you even get it. That's why you watch the defender when you motion. If he follows, you know it's man. Now you either send the guy back or you adjust.

A defense that stays disciplined in their gaps and doesn't react to motion is tougher. They're not giving you the free blocker. They're trusting their assignments. Against that, you're relying more on your blocking scheme actually winning at the point of attack.

That's why this is a tool. Not a cheat code. It helps. It doesn't fix everything.

How Does This Connect to the Rest of Your Run Game?

Counting numbers pairs with everything else you're doing on the ground. When you've got a go-to run play, Inside Zone, HB Stretch, whatever, this is how you make it work more consistently. You're not just calling the play and hoping. You're looking at the picture, fixing the math, then snapping.

And when you're cutting after the snap, don't hold turbo in traffic. Let the blocks set. Turbo while cutting kills your agility. You'll run past the hole or bounce off a defender you could've avoided. Open field? Yes. Traffic? No.

Count the numbers. Fix the math. Then run it.
