Containing QB Scrambles

CFB 27DefenseRun GameUser Defense

Quick Recap:

Press RB+LB (R1+L1 on PlayStation) before the snap to activate Contain on any pass rush. This keeps your outermost rushers on the edge so mobile QBs can't escape outside. Use it especially when blitzing, since blitzes naturally leave the edges exposed. The only thing you're giving up is the QB stepping up and throwing, and your interior defenders handle that.

The Short Answer: Use Contain When You Rush the Passer

QB taking off and running around on you? That's a contain problem. Here's the fix.

Xbox: Right Bumper + Left Bumper
PlayStation: R1 + L1

Hit that before the snap. Your defensive ends, or whoever your outermost rushers are, they stop trying to crash inside and start hooking around the outside. QB tries to roll out? They're right there. Can't escape. That's the whole point.

You should be using this, a lot, any time you're rushing the passer.

The way you WANT to get beaten is by a QB standing tall in the pocket and throwing dimes downfield. NOT by watching some dude take off and run 30 yards because your ends flew past him chasing air.

What Does Contain Actually Do in College Football 27?

Contain gives your outermost pass rushers outside shoulder leverage on the QB. Instead of attacking straight up the field or crashing inside. They loop around and seal the edge.

The QB has basically three options when you've got contain set:

  • Step up in the pocket and throw
  • Drop back too far, contains come free and still get pressure
  • Try to take off, contains come free and chase him down

That middle option, stepping up and throwing, that's the one you're okay giving up. You've got interior defenders for that. The QB making plays with his legs? Not happening if contain is doing its job.

---

When Should You Use Contain?

Any time you're calling a pass rush. Which is most of the time on passing downs.

Especially use it when:

  • The opposing QB has high speed or scramble ability
  • Your opponent keeps escaping outside on broken plays
  • You're blitzing. Because blitzes leave the edges wide open without contain
  • It's 3rd and medium or long and they NEED to throw

It doesn't mean stop rushing. It means rush smart. Contain isn't about being passive. It's about channeling the QB where YOU want him to go.

What Are the Mistakes People Make With Contain?

Mistake 1. Blaming Contain When the QB Escapes Inside

Contain protects the outside. That's it. The interior gaps? That's on your defensive tackles.

If the QB is sneaking through the middle. Don't trash contain. Fix the inside:

  • Add a QB spy to sit in that gap
  • Blitz someone into that lane to plug it

Contain did its job. Your DTs didn't.

Mistake 2. Putting Slow Ends on Contain Duty

This is a BIG one. You've got 300-pound defensive ends with 40 speed sitting on the edge. A scrambling QB is going to run right past them. Contain only works if your edge guys can actually chase someone down.

Check your personnel. If your ends are slow, consider which players you're actually activating contain with. You need athletes out there. Not just big bodies.

Mistake 3. Thinking Contain Is a Guaranteed Stop

It's not. It's a tool. Elite scrambling QBs, think Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, can still make your contain guys miss. That's real football. Sometimes the guy is just that good. Contain raises the floor on what the QB can do. It doesn't cap his ceiling to zero.

What Actually Beats Contain? (And What To Do About It)

Two things beat contain:

1. Elusive QBs making guys miss

High break tackle, high spin move, elite agility. They can slip past even a well-set contain. If this is happening consistently, look at adding a QB spy as a second layer. One guy just dedicated to following the QB wherever he goes.

2. The QB stepping up and finding open guys downfield

Honestly. This is the version of getting beaten that you're fine with. Contain isn't coverage. It's not stopping throws. Your DBs handle that. Contain's job is just to keep the QB from leaving the pocket entirely. If he's staying in and throwing? That's a coverage problem, not a contain problem.

---

How To Set Up Contain, Step by Step

  1. Call your defensive play
  2. Before the snap, hold RB + LB (Xbox) or R1 + L1 (PlayStation)
  3. Watch your edge rushers adjust their path. They'll arc outside instead of attacking straight up
  4. Snap the ball

That's it. No formation required. Works out of base defense, nickel, dime. Whatever you're running. If you're rushing the passer, you can slap contain on it.

---

Bottom Line

Scrambling QBs are annoying because most people just let it happen. They call a blitz, their ends fly inside, and the QB strolls outside for 15 yards like nobody's home.

Contain closes that door. Two buttons before the snap. That's the whole fix.

Your ends stay disciplined. The QB stays in the pocket. And now your coverage guys just have to do their job.

Run the contain. Run it often. Let the QB throw from the pocket and make your secondary earn their keep. That's the right way to play defense.
