4-2-5 Defense Base Setup

CFB 27DefensePlaybook Tips

Quick Recap:

Run **4-2-5 Over G** with a **Cover 2** shell pre-snap, then call **Cover Three Sky** as your base every play. Set Safety Depth to 9, Safety Width to Pinch, Zone Strategy to Aggressive, and zone drops to Flats 10 / Curls 5. Run all of this in practice mode before you take it live.

4-2-5 Defense Base Setup in College Football 27. Everything You Need

Open the 4-2-5 Man Pressure playbook. Get into 4-2-5 Over G. Set your shell to Cover 2. Call Cover Three Sky every single time. That's your base.

Everything else below is the setup behind that. Coaching adjustments, zone drops, contain, and how to build from there.

Go through this in practice mode first. Don't skip that part.

How to Set Up the 4-2-5 Defense

Step 1: Shell

Get into 4-2-5 Over G. Before you touch anything else, personnel, assignments, nothing, set your shell to Cover 2.

This matters because every play needs to look the same pre-snap. Your opponent can't know what's coming. Cover 2 shell does that. No exceptions.

Step 2: Coaching Adjustments

Click the right stick to open coaching adjustments. You can also set this in main menu settings if you prefer.

Set these:

  • QB Depth: 5
  • Safety Depth: 9
  • Safety Width: Pinch

Move one tab over to Cover Strategy:

  • Zone Strategy: Aggressive (with plaster on)
  • The related setting next to it: also Aggressive

Zone Drops:

  • Flats: 10
  • Curls: 5
  • Hooks: Default

Step 3: Zone It and Lock

For play calling. Set zone it and lock on as many options as you can. This opens up match coverage to play drop zone.

Drop zone means your players go exactly where they're supposed to go. No running around. No guessing. Each zone drops to its area and stays there.

Plaster being on means some matching will happen. But mostly you're in drop zone. That's what you want. Keep it simple.

Step 4: Add Contain

Pinch your D-line, then press Right Bumper + Left Bumper. That sets contain. Make it a macro if you want to save time.

Contain right now is solid. If they try to roll out - they can't. Lock the edges and force the QB to step up.

Why Cover Three Sky Is the Right Call Every Time

This is your base play. Cover Three Sky. Every snap.

It's not random. Cover Three Sky hits all five things a defense needs to do:

  1. Take away the flats
  2. Stop deep balls
  3. Stop the run
  4. Contain the QB
  5. Get pressure on the QB

Curls set to 5 shuts down drag routes and quick underneath stuff fast. Your user is already in that area. Deep integrity stays solid. You're not giving up easy deep balls. And it fits the zone drops you already set.

Nothing else does all five as a base. That's why it's the call.

---

What This Defense Actually Stops

Flats. Curl/flat at 5 closes that window fast. Your user is sitting right there.

Deep balls. Cover Three gives solid deep coverage. It has some holes deep, but you can't give away nothing. Give something, protect everything else.

QB scrambles. Contain locks both edges. They're not getting outside on you.

That's three of the five right there from one base call.

Where it takes some hits:

  • QB pressure. You're only sending four. It's okay, not great. Fix it with a pirate stunt, Tom two-man, or base pass rush depending on the situation.
  • Run defense. Solid if you follow run defense rules. That's a separate topic, but the base handles it reasonably well.

How to Build Out From the Base

Cover Three Sky with contain is your starting point. Every adjustment you make goes on top of that. Not instead of it.

Want more pressure on the QB? Run a blitz or a Texas four-man rush.

Want to stop the run more? Bring your high safety down into the box.

Want better deep coverage? Add more deep zones.

Want to take away underneath stuff even more? Shade underneath.

Want to contain the QB even harder? Spread your D-line.

Each tenant has a lever. You pull the one that fits what your opponent is doing. The base stays the same. You just layer on top.

Your default user spot: Over the middle.

What Counters Wide Formations

If they spread you out in a wide formation. Jump to Nickel 3-3 Over. Turn on hard flats, show blitz, and manually adjust your corners.

This gives you a box numbers advantage and shuts down screens that would otherwise eat you alive. Hard flats were fixed in the patch. They work the way they're supposed to now.

Common Mistakes People Make With This Setup

Skipping practice mode. Don't. Go through every piece of this before you use it in a game. You need to understand why it works, not just what to press.

Not setting the Cover 2 shell first. Your opponent will read your defense pre-snap if your plays don't look the same. Shell first. Always.

Ignoring zone drops. Curls at 5 is what kills the drag routes. Flats at 10 is what pushes your coverage out. Miss those settings and the whole thing has gaps.

Switching playbooks and losing the concepts. If you want to run a different playbook - fine. But take these concepts with you. The playbook doesn't matter. The structure does.

Trying to use match coverage when drop zone is what this setup is built for. Cover Four Quarters, palms default, quarters with swirl. Those are match coverages. More complex, players running all over. That's not this. Stick to drop zone until you have the base locked in.
