QB Mechanics

CFB 26OffensePassing

Quick Recap:

Stop throwing picks by using two QB protection mechanics: throw the ball away (roll out with RT/R2 + click right stick) when plays break down, and slide down safely (hold both triggers + click right stick) to avoid fumbles. Recognize pressure early on your first two reads and don't force throws into coverage.

How to Stop Throwing Picks With QB Protection Mechanics

Most people throw interceptions because they panic when plays break down. They see pressure, get spooked, and tap buttons randomly. Don't do that.

Two simple mechanics will save your games — throwing the ball away and going down with your QB. Both use the same button: click the right stick in. Not flick. CLICK.

When nothing's open and the pocket collapses — throw it away. Roll out with Right Trigger (RT on Xbox, R2 on PlayStation), then click the right stick. The ball goes out of bounds. No pick. No sack. Just an incomplete pass.

When you need to burn clock or avoid a fumble — go down safe. Hold BOTH triggers (RT + LT on Xbox, R2 + L2 on PlayStation) and click the right stick. Your QB slides down without taking contact.

These aren't advanced techniques. They're basic QB survival skills that most players ignore.

When to Throw the Ball Away

Use this ANY time a play breaks down and you don't see an open receiver. Specific situations:

  • Pressure gets home faster than expected
  • Your first two reads are covered
  • The pocket collapses before routes develop
  • You roll out but defenders stay in coverage
  • Third and long when a sack kills the drive

Don't force throws into coverage just because you called a play. Sometimes the defense wins the down. Take the incomplete and move on.

The key is recognizing it EARLY. If your first read isn't there and you feel pressure — don't wait. Roll out immediately and prepare to throw it away.

How to Execute the Throwaway

Step 1: Hold Right Trigger (RT/R2) to start your rollout. This gives your QB the proper throwing motion while moving.

Step 2: Roll toward either sideline. Doesn't matter which side — pick the one with less pressure.

Step 3: Once you're rolling out, CLICK the right stick in. Don't flick it or push it to a side. Straight down click.

The ball flies out of bounds. Incomplete pass. Clock keeps running in most situations.

Common mistake: Players try to throw it away from the pocket without rolling out. This often results in intentional grounding penalties because you're not outside the tackle box.

Another mistake: Flicking the right stick instead of clicking it. This activates different mechanics and won't throw the ball away cleanly.

When to Go Down With Your QB

This mechanic is perfect for clock management and avoiding fumbles. Use it when:

  • You're ahead late and want to burn time
  • You see a sack coming and want to avoid the fumble risk
  • You're scrambling but defenders have good pursuit angles
  • You want to set up a specific down and distance for your next play

It's not something you use every game. But certain situations — especially when protecting a lead — it's gold.

How to Go Down Safely

Step 1: Hold BOTH triggers — RT + LT on Xbox, R2 + L2 on PlayStation.

Step 2: Click the right stick in while holding both triggers.

Your QB slides down immediately. No contact. No fumble risk. You keep the ball and burn clock.

This works whether you're scrambling outside the pocket or just standing in the backfield. The dual trigger input tells the game you want to go down, not throw away.

Why These Mechanics Work

They eliminate the two biggest QB mistakes — forcing throws under pressure and taking unnecessary hits.

When you force throws, good players will jump routes and take them back for six. When you take sacks in bad situations, you kill drives and put your team in third and long situations.

These mechanics give you CONTROL over what happens when plays break down. Instead of panicking and making bad decisions, you have clear options that protect the football.

What Counters These Techniques

Smart opponents will start bringing edge pressure to stop your rollouts. They'll send outside rushers to contain you and prevent clean throwaways.

When this happens, you need to:

  • Get the ball out faster on normal plays
  • Use quick slants and bubble screens to punish aggressive pass rush
  • Call plays with built-in hot routes for pressure situations

The going down mechanic has no real counter — it just costs you yards. Use it smartly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Waiting too long to bail out. If your first read isn't open and you feel pressure, start your rollout immediately. Don't hope things develop.

Rolling into more pressure. Check which side has fewer pass rushers before you pick a direction.

Using the wrong button inputs. Practice the exact sequences — RT + click for throwaway, RT + LT + click to go down.

Bottom line: Click the right stick in. Learn when to throw it away versus go down. This will cut your interceptions in half.
