How to Shut Down 3rd and Long in College Football 26
Fourth and 23. They need a miracle. But somehow they find somebody open for a first down.
This absolutely stinks to give up. Instead of watching them complete some stemmed up curl route 50 yards downfield, you need that ball swatted. Better yet. You need to sack the quarterback.
Here's what you CANNOT do: go cover zero. All cover zero does is beg for them to throw something wide open underneath and get a billion yards after the catch. Cover zero is NOT the answer. When I do film reviews, that's all I see people try to do in this situation.
No, no, no. We need to get tactical.
The Four-Step System:
- Guess Pass, Right Bumper + Up on Right Stick
- Basic Zone Defense, Right stick click in
- Zone Drops to the Markers, Flats and hooks to 25 yards
- Tampa Two or Cover Three, Stay in cover two shell
Simple as that. You'll get a bunch of stops on third and fourth and long.
How to Set Up Your Zone Drops
First thing - GUESS PASS. Immediately when you see third or fourth and long, tap Right Bumper + Up on the Right Stick. That gets your defensive line better sheds. Puts the quarterback on a natural timer.
Not guaranteed to get crazy pass rush, but it makes your sheds way better.
Next. Get into basic zone defense. Right stick, click in. Then go into coaching adjustments.
Zone drop flats is where the magic happens. Let's say it's fourth and 23:
- Flats to 25
- Hooks to 25
Why? When they try to throw a deep curl or deep out flat, they have to catch it underneath you.
If it's fourth and 26, put your flats to 25. You want to be as close to that marker as you can. There's an argument. If we're going over rather than under, we don't want them throwing over top of us.
What Formation Works Best for Long Down Defense
The best third and fourth and long defenses come from Dime Normal.
This formation has the best pressure in the game. It also gets the best coverage for you in the game.
Play call-wise. Tampa Two or Cover Three. Ideally you're in a cover two shell.
I like to shade underneath just to get my flats into hard flats. They're still gonna play super deep.
How to User Defend the Seam
No matter what, you have to be aware of THE SEAM.
Most people will try this. Snap the ball and throw the seam as fast as they can. Quick first down. Game over.
The way we're ready for it is simple:
- When the ball snaps, run right to where the seam would be
- Seam can't be thrown
- Play the marker with your user
- Do NOT run past that first down marker
You're going to play just above that first down marker. If they try to go deep curl route or something, the seam's not there. Super covered.
If they try the quick seam. You're right there to break it up.
What NOT to Do on 3rd and Long
Don't make these mistakes:
DO NOT run match coverage. Match gets you burned on long developing routes. Stick to basic zone.
DO NOT run cover zero. I see this all the time. People think "they need 20 yards, let me bring everybody." Wrong. That's exactly what they want you to do.
Don't try blitzing. You're already guessing pass. That's enough pressure. Focus on coverage.
Don't set your zones too shallow. If it's 3rd and 15, don't put your flats at 10. Put them at 15. Make them throw it short of the sticks.
When This Strategy Works Best
This system works in any long down situation. 3rd and 8+, 4th and anything long.
Works especially well against:
- Deep curl routes
- Out routes to the sticks
- Quick seams
- Comeback routes
The zone drops force them to catch everything short. Your user takes away the seam. They're left with maybe some deep shot. But you've got safety help over top.
How Opponents Try to Counter This
Smart players will try a few things:
Deep shots over the top. That's fine. You've got safety help. Make them make the perfect throw.
Screens and draws. This is why you guess pass. Better run fits. Plus they need 20+ yards. Screen for 8 yards doesn't hurt you.
Bunch formations with picks. Stay disciplined with your user. Don't chase the first route you see. Play your zone.
Why This Works Better Than Blitzing
Everyone wants to blitz on 3rd and long. Send 7, 8 guys. Hope for a sack.
Problem is. If you don't get there, they've got single coverage everywhere. That's exactly what they want.
This system gives you:
- Consistent pressure from the guess pass
- Multiple coverage layers
- Zones sitting right at the sticks
- User help on the most dangerous route
You're not gambling. You're making them earn every yard.
Force them to make 2-3 perfect throws instead of giving them one free shot downfield.
That's how you shut down 3rd and long. No cover zero. No crazy blitzes. Just smart zone coverage with your drops in the right spots.
