TL;DR: The best offense in College Football 27 is this Notre Dame setup built around motion swings and halfback screens. Here's why it works. Man coverage and match coverage are everywhere in this game. Screens with your halfback moving BEFORE the snap beat both. Get him shuffling or swinging to the sideline. The defender trails him. You already win the leverage battle. Then you build plays OFF those screens.
The main formations:
- Gun Bunch Strong Wide
- Bunch Tight End Strong
- Y Trips Over (unbalanced, fun)
- Y Off Trips Weak
- Y Off / Y Off Weak
- Gun Doubles
The core idea is simple. Make the game EASY on yourself. You keep the meta formations for when you need to claw. But you also get tools to just win clean. That's the whole point.
Why are motion swings the best concept in College Football 27?
Motion swings are the heart of this offense. Gun Off Trips Weak is one of the main homes for them.
Here's why they're so good:
- Incredibly good vs. man
- Incredibly good vs. match
- They beat zone pretty well too
- You can pair them with strong route combos around them
So even if the defense ignores the motion. You STILL have a great route combo to go to. You're never stuck. That's the magic. There's always an answer.
How do halfback screens beat man and match coverage?
The big thing I love here. The amount of swing and shuffle screens built in.
When your halfback is in motion and the defender is trailing him. You've already out-leveraged the coverage. That's the whole idea.
The screens to run:
- Shuffle/Swing Screens out of Gun Bunch Strong Wide and Gun Off Trips Weak
- Run the motion. Hold the ball for a second if you KNOW you're throwing it
- The halfback gets to space. And skilled players in open space are tough to tackle in this game
Then there's the Tunnel Screen. You get the option to hit the motion guy outside OR hit the tunnel. It can be hit or miss, won't lie to you. But when it hits, you do serious damage.
Why should you make the game easy on yourself?
I've been a huge advocate of this since Madden 20.
I lost in the final 16 of a big tournament on ESPN. Lost by one possession. But I played really bad on offense the whole game. It was a dog fight on every single play.
Think about basketball. If you're a shooter and you're just missing, you want a layup. Get out on the fast break and get an easy one just to feel something.
My offense back then didn't have ANYTHING like that. Everything was a dog fight.
So I told myself: if the offense is going to be elite, it needs stuff that makes the game easy for ourselves.
That's what this Notre Dame offense does. When you're playing somebody worse than you. Or somebody who isn't ready for off-meta stuff. Why not make it easy?
What are the best runs in this College Football 27 offense?
The run game keeps defenses honest. Here are the key ones.
Halfback Zone, Pistol Wild Trips
One of Draftoft's favorite runs. He was the College World 25 champion. That's a big tournament, roughly 25K, a Heisman House Challenge, possibly Nissan-sponsored.
- Check your blocking by holding left trigger before the snap
QB Runs
- Anytime you're in a short-yardage spot, QB runs
- On inches, it's SO unlikely they stop you for literally an inch
- Swap in a backup QB for these spots. Saves wear on your starter
- Orbit Halfback Ankle. Send the orbit motion, attack right behind it
QB Zone
- Available out of several formations
- Don't overcomplicate it. If it's there, run it

What are the best pass plays and RPOs in this offense?
Once the screens and runs have the defense guessing, these plays punish them.
PA Slide
- The halfback has a great route on this. Check/release him
- He does a great job against match coverage. Then he runs a normal slide route
Orbit RPO / QB Power RPO
- Send orbit motion
- If they don't defend it, easy gain
- If they DO, you have the RPO read
Shuffle Dagger
- Out of the bunch/cluster formation
- Same concept as the plays from your other formations
Why should you run the same concept from multiple formations?
This is something I can't stress enough.
If you have a concept you like. Run it from more than one formation.
The motion swing concept works out of Bunch Offset AND Bunch Strong Wide. Not exactly the same, but close enough. And it looked good from both.
Your opponent has to account for it no matter where you line up. That's the advantage.
What defense should you pair with this offense?
I ran the 4-2-5 Shell defensive playbook in this video.
Why this one over 4-2-5 Man Pressure?
- More match coverages
- I'm a big advocate of match. Wanted access to more of it
Coverages I called:
- Cover Three Cloud
- Tampa Two
- Texas Fourman / Texas Twoman (with the safety involved)
- Weak Side Quarter / Quarters
- Single Mug look
Adjustments I made:
- Shade underneath
- Spy added on QB to prevent rollouts
- Contains both sides on obvious run/scramble situations
- Pass commit on obvious passing downs
The number one priority: contain the quarterback. When the QB can roll out and extend plays, it's so easy for them to move the ball. Once you take that away, most offenses struggle.
What do you do when the game goes bad?
Let me be real with you. In this video there were three turnovers. Two QB fumbles. A defensive end picked a pass and took it to the house.
Here's the reality. When you play a lot of games, you WILL have games like this. Games that leave you like.. yeah. That happened. And that's okay.
You battle back.
And here's a bonus. Extending games out is an advantage if you think you're the better player. If you got cheated or unlucky early, over time the better player tends to show. We were down. We came back to be up two possessions.
