The BEST Defense In College Football 27!

CFB 27User DefenseCoverageDefenseBlitz

Quick Recap:

Run Cover Three Cloud out of Single Mug in the 4-2-5 playbook every snap — set your shell to Cover Two, flip Auto Flip on, and put Cover and Zone Strategy on Aggressive. User a linebacker in the yellow zone and use the switch stick to jump routes. Mix in Cover 2 Man, Texas stunts, and Guess Pass when needed, but the base is all you need.

TL;DR: The best defense in College Football 27 is built on ONE base look - Cover Three Cloud out of Single Mug in the 4-2-5 playbook. You get pressure sending only four. You user a linebacker in a yellow zone. You use the switch stick to jump routes. Then you mix in change-ups like Cover 2 Man, Texas stunts, and Guess Pass when the situation calls for it. That's it. Nothing complicated. Just the base - done right, every snap.

Here's the whole thing laid out.

What is the best defensive scheme in College Football 27?

The base is Cover Three Cloud out of Single Mug in the 4-2-5 defensive playbook. USC runs this. A few other teams too.

Why I love it: knowing where all your players are at ALL times is a massive deal. Most people don't give that enough credit.

I ran into a guy on the street the other day. Recognized me from the tip videos. He told me how frustrating it is when his zones don't play where they're supposed to. Players going all over the place.

The fix? Dumb it down. Cover Three Cloud does exactly that.

How do you set up Cover Three Cloud in the 4-2-5?

Every time you get to your formation, do these four things:

  1. Get a Cover Two shell - right stick up and down
  2. Auto Flip Defensive Play Call - ON
  3. Cover Strategy and Zone Strategy - Aggressive
  4. Zone Drops - Default

On Aggressive, your guys play around, above, or below the zone they're showing. Conservative does the opposite. That tells you exactly where you're open, where you're not, where you're weak, where you're strong.

How do you fix your corners on 4th and 1 in Cover 4 Quarters?

If you run Cover Four Quarters, everyone is in a run fit. They're attacking the run. Everyone except your outside corners. Your corners just play their assignments.

Here's the problem. Say it's 4th and 1. Your corners are in an outside deep quarter assignment. Their first steps are gonna be back-pedaling - not downhill.

The fix: Hard Flat your outside corners.

Hard Flat forces their first steps downhill. They play their pass assignment, then flow to the run. And from a Hard Flat, they're already in a great spot to do that.

How do you stop the run on defense?

Run defense comes down to your user and where you flow. A few tips:

  • Always user a linebacker - someone in a yellow zone. Typically the easiest for you
  • In Cover Three Cloud, you'll have two yellow zones in the middle of the field
  • Use the yellow zone on the weaker side of the formation - the side opposite of where you think the run is going
  • Flow from the weak side. Huge tip for run defense

I also went 6-1 in spots. Knew I could shoot the gap on any inside runs as long as my user did a good job.

How do you get pressure with the Left Tex Two-Man stunt?

We're getting consistent pressure from a stunt called Left Tex Two-Man.

I have it saved as a macro. But if you wanna set it up yourself:

  1. Hold down the icon of the play call (in this case, Cover Three Cloud)
  2. Scroll down to Left Tex Two-Man
  3. Spread your D-line to left - right stick and up
  4. Hit contain - right bumper, left bumper

That's it. You're set up. And you're gonna get good pressure.

When should you switch Zone Strategy to conservative?

Here's something I caught myself doing wrong on 3rd and 23. I was on Aggressive Zone Strategy and hadn't changed it for the situation.

Fix it at the line:

  • Hold Left Trigger
  • Use the D-pad to switch between Aggressive and Conservative

I love Aggressive as my base. But you adjust based on the situation. 3rd and 23? I'm going Ultra Conservative. Get my guys playing back further.

Who is the most important player on defense?

Every single player has an assignment. The most important one on the field is your user.

Here's how to think about it:

  • Your user has a primary area to cover - in this case the right side of the field. Work THERE first
  • Once that area is clear, work back to other areas being attacked

The most common mistake? People user something that's ALREADY being defended.

If a route is attacking the right side and you already have defenders there - don't user over there.

Why does getting pressure with four defenders matter so much?

There's a Tom Brady press conference. He's talking about playing the Chiefs in the playoffs. The Chiefs had a really good edge rusher - Tamba Hali, I think. Another one opposite him too. That defense got really good pressure sending only four.

Brady said being able to get pressure sending four is one of the biggest advantages a defense can have. BY FAR.

That's what we're trying to do in all these schemes. Can we get pressure only sending four? It creates a lot of issues for your opponent.

What should you do pre-snap on every play?

Something I do EVERY snap - I'm guessing what my opponent is gonna call.

  • I saw that motion out
  • I moved a player outside because I figured he's gonna attack outside with it
  • I wanted better leverage on that side

It all depends on what I think my opponent is trying to do. Make a read. Set up for it.

How does the switch stick work on defense?

The switch stick. HUGE play.

I see a play developing, I switch stick up to the nearest defender to take away a route I think he's throwing. It pays off.

Switch stick + your user = the two biggest things you can do on defense.

If you see a route breaking open, use the right stick to switch to the nearest defender and go make a play on it.

Here's a play I set up:

  • User up top
  • Move my user in case he runs - I want to come downhill fast
  • If he passes, I switch stick down

He passes. I switch stick down. I'm there. And we've now had TWO almost-defensive-line interceptions.

How do you disguise Cover 2 Man?

Here's a really basic change-up. Cover 2 Man - but I want to SHOW Cover 2 still. So I'm showing the normal stuff I've been in.

Adjustments:

  • Shade inside
  • Route Commit inside
  • Press

We go Cover 2 Man. Something he hasn't seen. A very basic idea. Nothing complex. No match or anything. Quick incompletion.

How do you set up Ultra Aggressive coverage with Guess Pass?

Back in the base defense. Use Left Trigger to set the boys to Ultra Aggressive. Then - Guess Pass.

  • Right bumper + up on the right stick for better sheds
  • Guess Pass HURTS you in the run game
  • Guess Pass HELPS you a lot in the pass game

Switch stick. Interception. Just like that - pick. Very, very easy. Very solid.

Why do you need to contain when you blitz?

My opponent got good pressure one play. But he didn't contain.

When you don't contain, you give your opponent the chance to roll out. Even if they play good defense. He played objectively good D. Doesn't matter. No contain = roll out.

Always ask yourself when getting pressure: am I containing?

If not - it's gonna be tough. You just roll out.

What defensive adjustments should you make in the second half?

Already up one stop, so change back to a Cover Two shell. Then back to Cover Three Cloud.

  • Moved the middle third safety over to protect the seam
  • Cover Three is always susceptible in the seam. That's the adjustment

He's running the ball a lot. Texas stunts do a good job against that.

When he goes to pass - Guess Pass again. Give the pass rush a buff.

How do you bluff your user in Cover 2 Man?

Showing Cover 2 Man. Then crashing down.

  • Bluffing that I'm user on one guy - but I'm not
  • Using the right stick to untarget guys you don't think are blitzing

And at the end of the half - Ultra Conservative. Backed everybody off. Middle third safety back in position, man up. Then a fumble. With 0.5 seconds left.

One of the keys to a great defense: get a fumble.

How do you adjust to motion and quick flat routes?

Running Cover Three Cloud, ready the Left Tex Two-Man stunt, Aggressive zones, usering the safety.

He motions a guy out. The read: step the user out a little in case someone fires immediately to the flat.

Wrong read. The tight end drags instead. But I saw it coming. Good knockout.

  • Switch stick gets the knockout - not the pick that time, but it prevents the big play
  • Key distinction: it stops the gain, doesn't end the drive

What's the counter when your opponent attacks your switch stick?

This is the battle. A good opponent will see your switch stick tendencies and attack them directly.

One play, I stepped the user out worried about a quick flat. He didn't go there. He took advantage of the switch stick. Really good counter from him.

Why it worked: he identified the aggressive switch stick tendency and attacked it.

The counter to the counter:

  • Switch stick and stay put
  • Or don't switch stick at all

Likely he would've gone back to that same ball. Maybe not. But in my experience, a lot of people would.

When should you break out the Texas Four Man stunt?

Something I hadn't used yet - Texas Four Man stunts.

Why now:

  • Gets pressure off the right edge
  • Also helps in the run game

Adjustment: hop on him in case he runs again. Really selling out for the run. User up. He won't call play action. He runs - user is there the entire way.

Result: third sack. He tried to outrun the user. Cost him big.

What defense wins it on third and six?

Call: Palms, user in the weak side quarter. Then I caught it and had to go back.

He likely knows that look, so go back to Cover Three Cloud.

With that outside third - since he's not aggressive - he plays the corner route. And that's the stop. GGs.

Do you need to totally switch your defense to win?

No.

The game had been a hard-fought back and forth. He played well. But the defense was solid the whole time. It really came down to ONE thing:

Does he get us by attacking the switch stick - or do we get him with a switch stick?

That's the game within the game. Good defense sets up easy offense. We're not doing anything complicated here. This is the base.

Where do you get the full defensive scheme?

This is the base of what I believe is the best defensive scheme in the game right now.
